What Are the Different Choices for Private Schools?

Parents are concerned about giving their kids the best education possible. While many can find quality education in the public system, others still choose to send their children to private schools instead. Choosing which type of institution to enroll their child in requires research and an understanding what the options are.
Parochial Institutions
Parochial education systems are among the most common for parents to choose. These specialized institutions teach the core courses such as English, math, reading, science, spelling, and history. However, in addition to these classes, children learn about religion and take part in weekly services at the school. Many different establishments throughout the country are based on different religious teachings. It is easy for parents to find one following their personal beliefs.

Waldorf Education
Some students are more creative and need that outlet in order to learn efficiently. Waldorf education emphasizes artistic expression throughout primary educational years. As the student matures into high school, the emphasis moves off artistic expression and focuses more on scientific inquiry and discovery.
Children enrolled in Waldorf private schools have the same teacher through the primary grades in order to gain a sense of stability and security. The teacher gets to know his or her students very well and discovers how they learn, giving him or her an advantage on how to best approach a new subject with the child. Children do not receive grades. Instead, the teacher assesses their progress and discusses it with parents at intervals throughout the school year.

Montessori Schools
When enrolled in a Montessori facility, students are encouraged to learn through exploration and discovery. The teacher is on hand to guide children with their learning, assess the progress, and guide the student into new areas of discovery when it is time.

As the classrooms are designed to have multiple ages learning at the same time, the school encourages social and individual development. Instructors give lessons to small groups or one-on-one as needed. The rooms have work areas and educational material located throughout, including stories, charts, time lines, and objects of nature. The system's philosophy is that the children should learn to live responsibly in the world and adhere to the tenets of respect.

Military Academy
Military academies are a solution for those who are considering joining the service after high school. Many of the country's brilliant military leaders began their career with an education at this type of institution. These private schools focus on the core curriculum of math, English, reading, science, and history. However, these institutions are known for instilling a sense of personal and team discipline that is carried through life. Students go through physically demanding military training from the time of enrollment to graduation.
This educational system is very selective; not just anyone can get into military school. The admissions process is rigorous and each school has its own requirements. Some are gender specific while others accept both male and female applicants.

The choice between private schools depends on the way your child best learns. Children who are more creative benefit from a Waldorf structure. Those who are independent learners will do well in a Montessori environment. If your religion is important to you, a parochial school is best. Students with an interest in military service or just want a more disciplined environment will thrive at a military academy.
